Nainital, famously known as the "Sarovar Nagri" or "Lake City," holds a distinguished place in both education and tourism. Surrounded by serene natural beauty, it was once the winter capital during the British era. Over the years, Nainital has nurtured countless bright minds, and many of its alumnae—particularly girls—are now excelling in various professions around the world, carrying forward the town’s rich educational legacy.
A key contributor to this tradition of excellence is PM Shri Atal Utkrisht Government Inter College (formerly AUGGIC), a historic institution located in the heart of Nainital. The college is housed in a world heritage building constructed in the Gothic architectural style during the British period. Established in 1913, it was upgraded to a High School in 1939, and further elevated to the Intermediate level in 1950, offering a wide range of 16 subjects. In recognition of its consistent performance and heritage value, it was declared a Model School in 2016.
Adding to its accolades, in 2024, the institution earned the prestigious honour of being included in the PM SHRI (PM Schools for Rising India) scheme, further affirming its role as a leading center of learning and all-round development.
